Heating, air, and refrigeration systems are becoming increasingly sophisticated and complex. As a result, many HVAC companies are finding that the job is beginning to require more than good mechanical aptitude and spatial intelligence. Although HVAC Technicians can still learn on the job, most employers now prefer to employ those who have completed a formal apprenticeship, or trade school/technical school training, and these programs often take between 6 months to two years to complete. Most branches of the armed forces also provide HVAC service tech training.

Physical Challenges
A significant proportion of physically demanding work is included in the typical HVAC service tech job description, and it usually requires sitting, standing, and walking, each about one-third of the time. However, there is also lifting, carrying, stooping, kneeling, crawling, climbing, balancing, and working in cramped or awkward positions. Depending on the employer and the job site, a tech is often exposed to extremes of temperature and dirty or dusty conditions. Additionally, there are potential respiratory hazards from dust, asbestos, and refrigerant, along with danger from electrical wires and/or flammable fuel lines.

Changes in the Works
The demand for qualified HVAC techs is expected to increase faster than the average for all other occupations. This increase is due to estimated replacement timeframes of old and malfunctioning equipment, in addition to the expected retirement of current techs and the increased complexity of newer systems. New technologies in solar energy, hydronics (water-based heating systems), and other green technologies, along with computer-controlled smart-home systems, will affect the typical HVAC service tech job description, as many techs will bring an increased skill set to the job and may limit themselves to the specialization of one particular aspect of the industry. HVAC techs are responsible for installing and maintaining temperature control systems. These techs are educated and skilled, and their jobs often take them to schools, apartment complexes, factories, nursing homes, and numerous other facilities where indoor climate control and air quality are integral for optimal comfort and health of the employees, visitors, and residents of these facilities. However, these jobs can be physically demanding, and potentially dangerous.


Society is constantly looking for the ultimate level of comfort. Underfloor heating systems originally designed for single rooms, such as master bathrooms are now being used in entire homes to provide heating and even air conditioning. Underfloor heating is a great option for office buildings, homes, hotels, and apartment complexes.

Electric Underfloor Heating
Electric underfloor heating is most often seen in single-room applications. Master bathrooms and single bedrooms benefit most from this type of heat source. The coils, carbon films, and pre-formed cable mats that carry the heat have a very low profile. For this reason, they can be installed directly under nearly any type of flooring. Electric underfloor units can only provide heat, however, and are not typically recommended for large or commercial spaces. Small, pre-fabricated underfloor units are easy to install and can completely change the thermal dynamics of nearly any space.

Hydronic Underfloor Heating and Cooling
Hydronic underfloor units can heat, cool and dehumidify a room. Hydronic units use pipes filled with heated or chilled water to provide climate control. Hydronic underfloor systems are commonly seen in office and apartment applications to utilize spaces below floors further. Underfloor heating is renowned for its ability to heat surfaces that would otherwise stay cool throughout the year. While modern forced-air HVAC systems are designed to be extremely efficient at heating and cooling, there is no comparison to adequately heated concrete, slate, and tile floors. This is especially true in bathrooms and master bedrooms. Underfloor heating is also a great option for areas susceptible to mold and mildew since closed water loops and electric wires are not conducive to their growth. Low-temperature underfloor units do not create burn or fire hazards since they do not occupy any wall space.

The efficiency of underfloor units has been debated for decades, but recent scientific studies have shown significant decreases in energy costs compared to other heating units. Several factors, including insulation ratings, depth of floor panels, and surface material characteristics, can all have a profound effect on the efficiency of underfloor units. Ventilating an attic is extremely important throughout the year, regardless of the climate. An attic ventilation system creates a path that allows for continuous airflow and produces a cooling effect. Air is pulled through the soffit vents and flows out through higher vents. The kinds of HVAC heat pumps available
There are many different types that you can choose but there are few that are popularly used by building owners. One of them is called an air source heat pump. This is alternatively called an air-air source. Its work is to absorb heat from the outer air and to pump it inside the house to provide the much-needed hot sensation. The parts that enable it to perform its job are very familiar coils that carry the refrigerant, which absorbs the heat being tapped from the outdoor air. Perhaps you are almost concluding that the air-source HP is only necessary for heating a home. The item can also be remodeled to work in a reverse direction so that it absorbs and dissipates heat from the indoor air. Most of them have a reversing valve to allow heating and cooling.

Another type of HP is called a Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP). Its working mechanism is quite different in that it sucks heat from an underground source and conveys it into the house. It can also absorb indoor heat and convey it into the ground. This is also called a geothermal heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning unit. Usually, it consists of piping loops put into the ground and water (refrigerant) is made to pass through them. A mixture of glycol and water is also used as a refrigerant for conveying heat. The pipes are buried about sixty to two hundred feet below the ground and configured in several ways. In a closed loop system, the piping loops are arranged horizontally or vertically. They can also be dipped into an underground water table or lake. In an open loop system, they must be dipped into an underground water pool established to exist.


Air handlers have many uses with HVAC systems. They have many uses, such as providing fresh air inside a house, and they are usually the main part of an air conditioning unit. The larger commercial buildings require big air handlers that can move up to ten thousand CFM. If you are thinking of buying an air handler unit, you need to find out more information about it. Blower: Alternatively called a fan, a blower is often large and cage-like. It is propelled by an alternating current electric motor, and when it spins, it moves air. Two or more of these sieves can be used to ensure the incoming or returning air is completely clean. In short, course-grade and fine-grade filters must be used together. One of them can be the cheaper variety as you can replace it regularly to protect the other one. If you do not replace this item it could collapse because it cannot withstand the pressure from the blower.

Heating and cooling parts: the AHUs’ main role is to provide heating and cooling benefits and to do that, they need to have special parts. One of these parts includes the fuel burning heater which is also called the refrigeration evaporator. It is located in the air flow directly. The systems might also benefit from heat pumps and electric resistance elements. The whole thing depends on the kind of building in question. A big commercial AHU might include some coils for supplying vapor for heating and cold water for cooling. The vapor comes from the central furnace/boiler while the cold water comes from the central chiller. Your HVAC unit is unique and it should use unique air handlers too. The humidifiers are used to increase the moisture level in the air, especially in the colder areas. The indoor air is always hot to make the dwellers comfortable. As a result, the ever-heated air might be too dry, which could affect its quality. There are various types of humidification, including ultrasonic, vaporizers, evaporative and several others.


Licensing requirements for HVAC technicians and contractors vary widely from state to state, and a technician working in Texas might not be permitted to do the same job in another state. Below is an overview of some differing policies within the U. S. General Licensing Requirements. In general, most states require an HVAC technician to have undergone at least two years or 4,000 hours of training, and to pass a state examination. In some states, this education may be gained through an apprenticeship or on-the-job training, while other states require that the trainee attend a two-year college or trade school. States that do not require a specific form of training still generally require that certified technicians have taken a state-approved examination qualifying them for professional work.

Rigorous Policies
Some states have quite rigorous licensure requirements. California, for example, has no less than 43 regulations governing contractor licensing! HVAC contractors only need to obtain one of these licenses, however. The C20 can be acquired upon taking an examination and paying a $400 fee, but the prospective technician must also be able to prove that he or she has undergone at least four years of certified training. Technicians must also be bonded and undergo a background check run by the FBI.

Moderate Policies
States such as Washington and Oregon do not require prospective technicians to take a state-approved examination but expect HVAC contractors to have completed at least 4,000 hours of work in the field in which they are certified. In general, states with moderately lenient HVAC licensing regulations tend to have county and city laws that vary from place to place; these may enforce stricter policies than those dictated by state laws.

States that Do Not Require Licensing
Illinois is one of the few states that does not currently require licensing for HVAC technicians, but this may change in the near future. Several groups have been advocating different regulation and licensing policies to be adopted by the state, including some which are quite strict and others which appear more lenient. Because HVAC technician licensing is not required by the state, county, and city policies, vary widely, as each district must devise its own set of rules and regulations.

Determining the License Laws for Your State
Wherever you live, the best way to determine the licensing requirements for your state is to contact either the state regulatory agency (if there is one) or a local HVAC contractor who may be able to supply you with the resources and information that you need. Websites such as the one published by the National Contractor License Service also provide information on the contact information for regulatory services in every state. While licensing rules and regulations can seem intimidating, they have been put in place to protect home and business owners from poorly designed or installed HVAC systems and not to prevent technicians from making a living! With diligence and the appropriate attitude, a good technician should be capable of meeting regulatory requirements in any state.

There are a variety of scenarios in which heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) professionals find themselves when working on heating and cooling systems. While there are a variety of tools needed for these jobs and the possibilities are almost endless, there are several different scenarios that lend themselves to a fundamental group of HVAC tools.

In-floor radiant heating HVAC tools
Radiant heating is becoming more popular as it’s a proven way to save energy in the home, so more heating and cooling professionals are being asked to install this type of heating system. Drawing from the tools already at their disposal, those who work in the heating industry are often able to tackle these jobs without any additional supplies besides those that come as part of the floor heating system. There are specific radiant heat tools, and those include a foamboard stapler, foamboard staples, pex-to-wire tool (for securing pex-to-wire with a steel clip), and, of course, the pex-heating tubing itself and the fittings that go with it.

Fiberglass ductwork HVAC tools
Working with fiberglass is probably one of the most common materials that HVAC professionals come in contact with. It is involved with many heating and cooling systems, and thus, the tools needed to work with or repair it are an important part of any heating and cooling worker’s arsenal. There are a number of types of equipment specific to working with fiberglass, such as knives, ties and tools. One such HVAC tool, the flex duct tool, provides three-in-one capabilities, allowing workers to cut through duct and wire, as well as providing a tie tensioning mechanism.

Metal ductwork HVAC tools
This genre of heating and cooling work perhaps comes with the requirement for the most equipment! HVAC workers typically use hammers, saws, riveters, drills, caulking, power tools, and other equipment to make the job easier. There are a number of folding tools to consider for this type of work, which free up space in your bag. A few include the hand seamer, which provides powerful leverage but is still compact; the mini brake, which makes a bend in galvanized steel up to 135 degrees; and alignment tools that fold down to relatively small sizes.

Multi-purpose HVAC tools & equipment
There are of course a number of other types of HVAC equipment that are necessary on the job. They include things that make work a bit easier and more comfortable: items like aprons, knee pads, face masks, power tools and the like. It’s also a good idea to have a reliable bag large enough to carry the necessary equipment but not too heavy or cumbersome. The larger specialty HVAC tools don’t have to be carried around at all times. With these HVAC tools, working in the heating and cooling field will be that much easier, and workers will have what they need to get a variety of jobs done properly.



Air filters are a big part of HVAC systems and their main job is to trap any debris or particles that can otherwise congest the HVAC unit. The indoor air consists of dust particles, microorganisms, animal fur and other smaller debris that can easily pollute the air. If that happens the HVAC needs to have a way of screening the incoming air so that the particulates can be left on the filter. In some units, you will find that even the outgoing air finds a sieve right before it exits the system not to run the risk of some particles being blown back to the system. In simpler words, the filter’s main role is to allow only the air to enter the heating and cooling unit and block the entry of debris. A system that can cause balanced air spots in the entire house must be very expensive and we need to take care of it. When you replace a blocked and damaged af, you can help prolong the life of your costly HVAC system. You are advised to assess the unit often to find out if there is a need to change the filter.

Some filters are not long-lasting, and they easily get damaged. If you prefer using these cheap items you should also be ready to replace them often to avoid affecting the efficiency of your systems. If you need an economical product, you may go for the spun fiberglass material. Even if they are inexpensive, you need to note that they are only good at trapping big particles. As a result, you need to change them at least once a month. These can be expensive in the long run because they are limiting you to not more than one month replacement period.

The other common types are called pleated HVAC filters which are more reliable than the fiberglass options. They can catch slightly smaller air particles than the types described above because of their pleats. Even so, they need to be changed occasionally.

Another very effective and reliable item is called electrostatic. It is specifically designed to catch the tinier debris that would otherwise pass through if one uses the aforementioned sieve options. If it can capture tiny debris then catching larger ones is not a problem. As their name suggests, these items use static charges which are generated as air is passed through them. The charge lures and captures the particulates regardless of their size. These items are versatile as they are reusable but they are expensive, unfortunately. Since they can be reused, electrostatic filter styles are more costly than disposable styles. If you clean them regularly you can use them for a much longer time.

Another highly dependable option is called the high-efficiency particulate arrestance or HEPA. It is one of the most highly efficient HVAC filters you can find and its success rate is ninety-nine-point-seven percent. Apart from the air particles, these sieves are known to prevent even allergens from entering the heating and cooling system.


HVAC control systems allow building operators to properly control the temperature, humidity, and ventilation throughout a building. The first HVAC control systems were pneumatically operated. However, technological innovations have standardized electronic and direct digital controllers. Some control systems are more sophisticated than others. Some are programmable, while others can even be operated via the Internet.

Pneumatic controls
Pneumatic controls use compressed air as a power source. These analog controllers were once the most commonly used in non-residential buildings. Pneumatic control systems make it simple to regulate temperature, humidity, and pressure. There are still a large number of pneumatic control systems in place in older buildings. However, pneumatic control systems are quickly being replaced by more sophisticated analog, electronic and digital controls.

Analog electronic controls
Due to increased flexibility, analog electronic controls began to replace pneumatic controllers. Analog electronic controls utilize analog semiconductor components as a power source. Many times a single device was able to manipulate several electronic controllers. This control device is designed to operate all functions of a specific application such as control of a single zone air handler. Due to their high cost analog electronic controls are being replaced by direct digital controls.

Direct digital controller
Unlike analog electronic controllers, direct digital controls usually have analog and digital inputs and outputs. The inputs are used to measure temperature, humidity, and pressure. Digital inputs normally use contacts from a control device. Analog inputs, on the other hand, measure a voltage or current from a sensing device that measures temperature, humidity, velocity, and pressure. Many direct digital controllers are programmable, meaning their program codes may be manipulated for individual preferences.

Control valves and dampers
One of the most common methods HVAC systems use for controlling the flow of air is control valves. In an HVAC system, a valve is a pipe fitting used to control the flow of air through opening, closing, or partially obstructing entryways into specified areas in a building. Control valves are usually either two-way or three-way mixing valves. A damper is a specific type of valve that regulates airflow from inside an air duct. Dampers commonly come in the form of plates which may open and close manually or electronically.

HVAC control systems use actuators to move or control the system’s valves. Actuators usually operate by either electricity or pneumatic pressure. The electric actuators can be either direct or remote mount. Actuators can also be spring return or non-spring return. Some HVAC control systems use low-voltage actuators, which are available through select manufacturers. HVAC systems designers may choose between factory-mounted actuators or linkages for field installation.

Building automation systems
Some HVAC control systems can link to a building automation system, a computerized network of electronic devices that allow monitoring and controlling of the climate of a building. This includes lighting, temperature, humidity, and other variables. Building automation systems allow operators more control over HVAC system functions by allowing local or remote control, as well as occupancy scheduling or configuration.

Knowledge of HVAC control systems and products will allow you to make informed decisions when installing and designing your HVAC project. Some simpler projects will only require minimal controls and will not need some of the more sophisticated features. Other larger projects may require advanced integration into building automated systems.


HVAC professionals and engineers may choose to use HVAC design software to assist in creating plans for installing an HVAC system in a building. The software assists in various aspects of the HVAC design process, such as calculating room-by-room loads and airflow, duct system layouts, and determining necessary materials for the specified project. However, each software is different. Some are more specialized in certain functions than others.

HVAC system analysis software
Many software companies offer HVAC system analysis tools, which are designed to quickly evaluate the energy and economic performance of a prospective design. A humidifier is used to increase the moisture content in the interiors of a home. There are many types of humidifiers, including a bypass, powered, steam and others. It is usually attached to the return air duct and can be integrated into the thermostat. Next, you must cut another opening in the supply plenum where a six-inch pipe starter collar should be mounted. Now, it is time to return all the components of your bypass humidifier into the housing. You have to do this correctly to avoid any repeat jobs later on. Attach the water supply tube to the upper part of the water panel and fix a twenty-four-volt transformer to the side of the air handler. Just ensure that the position you install will be convenient for wiring.

Complete the wiring process on the high voltage section of the transformer and then mount the humidistat above the humidifier. The work of the humidistat is to analyze how humid the air is in a given area. Complete the wiring process on the low-voltage section of the transformer. Next, you want to fix the drain tube to any other operational drain location in your home. Check if your humidifier has a saddle valve attached to a metal water line.
