Services

Our Plumbing Company offers a wide range of conventional and specialty services. We quickly respond to small and large problems whenever our loyal customers call. Our extensive collection of tools and state of the art equipment can be used to deal with almost any emergency. We also use our comprehensive plumbing experience and design capabilities to help people with remodeling projects and new construction. Customers depend on us when they have complex challenges that require creativity and craftsmanship. When the work is done, we make sure that everything is clean, organized, and back to normal. Services and products include but are not limited to the categories below:

Emergency Response

Responses can be expected 24 hours every day because plumbing emergencies happen at any time. Water can damage property very quickly and our customers know that we will respond without delay. A quick evaluation is made during those stressful phone calls and customers may be asked to take steps that can limit potential damage while we are traveling to the home or business. Our trucks are stocked with a great assortment of common parts and supplies that enable an immediate elimination of most problems. This also expedites the job because trips to a supply company are generally not needed. Think of our trucks as emergency rescue vehicles.

Unlimited Products

You need more than professional expertise and quality craftsmanship. Although our business is focused on services, we know the value of choosing equipment, appliances, and supplies that your particular situation needs. Reseller relationships with some major manufacturers are maintained because we trust their products and warranties. Unlike many of our competitors, we are not limited to a narrow range of manufactures. You can rely on our broad knowledge of the industry and product experience when we make recommendations. Purchase a product yourself and we will do the installation. Or we can search for what you need and find the best price. When replacements must match unique fixtures that may not be manufactured anymore, we will conduct a thorough search and find the right product.

New Appliance Research & Installation

Appliances must eventually be replaced and we can simplify the experience. We can help you with refrigerators, stoves, dishwashers, and much more. You may just need help with an installation but we can also study the situation and recommend products. Our expertise extends to anything that uses water and gas.

Water Softeners & Filters

Hard water can produce problems if not managed properly. It can cause a substance to form on the inside of pipes, water heaters, and appliances that eventually result in clogged pipes. Hard water also reacts with soap to form a sticky scum. We can repair or replace an existing water softener or install something new. You should also consider water filters because they provide bottle quality at the tap. However, our recommendation is a carbon whole house filtration system that connects to the main water supply. It provides healthy filtered water throughout the entire house.

Faucets, Sinks, Bathtubs & Other Fixtures

We can acquire and install anything from small faucets to heavy bathtubs. Whether you are replacing something old, remodeling, or constructing new rooms, we can help. You can choose sink hardware, commodes, shower units, or anything else and we will provide professional installation services. Or we can show you an almost endless variety of options and deliver whatever is chosen. Less visible technologies such as constant pressure systems and automatic temperature controls can also be installed. We can fix or replace something simple like a garbage disposal or design and create the ultimate bathroom.

Tankless Water Heaters

We have researched and evaluated every major tankless water heater on the market and can recommend one to suit your needs. These on-demand systems offer energy efficiency, space savings, and high levels of safety. Never run out of hot water again. Most tankless water heaters conserve the wasted energy that you would otherwise burn by heating a traditional tank. We can also help you apply for substantial tax credits that the government will give when these systems are installed.

Conventional Water Heaters

Water heaters with tanks are best for some families. Because there are many sizes, styles, and brands available, the best choice may not be obvious. We can help you decide which model is best and then find a great price. Installation of the energy source and water systems can be completed quickly after we deliver your new equipment. With expertise in gas and electric heaters, we can recommend the best solution for your needs.

Specialty Gas Installation & Repairs

Natural gas is a safe and reliable energy source. But caution is recommended when dealing with gas because one mistake can be very costly. We are trained and licensed to add a gas line to your home and do everything inside. Do you want an economical gas stove, a fireplace, or the ultimate backyard barbeque? We can help you make the best choices. Then we can install everything safely and efficiently. Ask us about gas sensors and alarm systems that can give you peace of mind. Call quickly if you ever have a gas problem and we will respond immediately. It may also be wise to let us teach your family members about safe gas management.

Water System Diagnostics

Is your money running down the drain? In addition to higher water bills, little leaks can lead to big expenses. Water that escapes from your plumbing system can damage floors, walls, and ceilings. Pipes that have minor or major blockages can cause other problems. Among other things, bad pipes can cause low water pressure and health issues. We use the most advanced technology to detect current and potential leaks or clogged pipes. A thorough diagnostic process can provide an accurate assessment of your entire plumbing and sewage systems. Our advanced video and sonic systems can find leaks or clogged pipes before any work is done. These cameras have also been used to locate jewelry that was lost down the drain.

Rooter Services

Our advanced technologies can solve every kind of sewage or drain problem that you may encounter. Diagnostics through our penetrating video camera system or an audio location device will lead to a recommended strategy. Then we may employ a power rodding cable system, high-pressure water jets, or other methods to quickly solve the problems. Root intrusions and debris buildup in outside sewage lines or clogged pipes inside the house can be quickly fixed. Avoid backflow and other future problems by asking us to clean your drainage and sewer system.

Repiping

Old water pipes will eventually leak but they also accumulate internal materials over time that can cause other problems. Eventually, the inside pipe diameter shrinks to decrease water flow and pressure, but there are also health hazards. The existence of microbiologically influenced corrosion, dirt, rust, minerals, and fungi can make your water cloudy and impure. Many customers wait until they see dark flakes in their water or an odd taste before something is done. But by that time, water had been flowing past the growing substances for a while. We can test your system and determine whether a repiping job is needed. Old pipes can be replaced with new copper or chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC) to create a system that will last many decades. Documented repiping projects also increase property value.

Trenchless Technologies

Outside sewage pipes can collapse, break, or be punctured by roots and the result is contaminated seepage. Conventional methods require the digging of long trenches in beautiful lawns and gardens. Landscaping costs can be significant. But we can avoid that scenario through trenchless technologies. We use pipe bursting and relining systems that pull materials through existing openings to replace the old materials. Roots won’t be able to penetrate the jointless pipe. And calcification will be eliminated because deposits can’t adhere to the new materials. Ask us to describe the amazing process. When we are finished, your sewage system will last for more than fifty years.

Fountains & Decorative Water Features

Water can be used in many ways to make your property more interesting and beautiful. Fountains from the simple water feature to an elaborate construction can be placed in the front or back yard. We can work with your architects and landscape designers or put a team together for any decorative water feature. Our job is to create an internal plumbing system that makes the water do what has been designed. Almost anything is possible.

General Consulting, Systems Design & Planning

When you have any questions about plumbing problems or possibilities, we can help. Our most important functions often relate to planning and creative problem-solving. Rooms and areas that are added to an existing structure require a comprehensive plumbing strategy to integrate systems. We work with architects to plan water and gas system designs for new homes. Another service is assistance with insurance claims when condition documentation is needed. Warranties and relationships with manufacturers can be complicated. We simplify the process. You can also count on us to explain how federal and local tax credits for new equipment purchases might be worth considering. The government wants your property to be green and they offer many incentives.

Real Estate Evaluations

Don’t buy a house until you know the condition of your plumbing and gas systems. A comprehensive analysis can let you understand what has to be done after the realty deal is closed. In many cases, the seller will pay for inspection services. Water content testing is important because some old pipes can cause contamination problems. A home buyer should also have statistical evidence of water pressure at all of the fixtures. Internal clogs or problems with the outside sewage lines may not be immediately obvious. We can give you a comprehensive and accurate report.

Preventative Maintenance

Most people think about their plumbing when water is pouring onto the floor or drains are clogged. Emergency repairs are expensive in comparison to what it takes to prevent problems from occurring. Ken Colgan Plumbing offers a preventative maintenance program that can limit problems over time. A comprehensive annual inspection of the water and gas systems can save you money. Additionally, Ken can instruct the family about simple things that can be done to keep your plumbing systems healthy.

Toilets That Fill Slowly

Toilets that fill slowly are usually in need of a new ballcock. It is sometimes possible to adjust an existing ballcock to increase its flow rate, but replacement is usually the most logical course of action. A crimped supply tube can cause a toilet to fill slowly. Every now and then a supply tube is hit with a mop or kicked to a point that it crimps. These occasions are rare, but they do happen. Don’t neglect to inspect the closet supply when troubleshooting for the reason a toilet is filling slowly. The cutoff valve under a toilet should always be checked to prove that it is in a full-open position. It is possible that debris has gotten into the stop valve or the supply tube. To check for this, disconnect the ballcock nut and check the water pressure at the top of the closet supply tube. If it is inadequate, remove the supply tube and see what the pressure is like at the valve. If you are still experiencing low pressure, look to the water distribution piping.

If a toilet is supplied with water from a galvanized steel water pipe, there is a good chance the water distribution pipe will need to be replaced. Galvanized pipe tends to rust and clog up with age. To determine if the problem is in the distribution pipe, all you have to do is remove the stop valve and check the pressure at the end of the water pipe. Be careful not to flood the bathroom when conducting this test. To avoid flooding, have an assistant standing by the main water cutoff to quickly turn the water on and off. You won’t need much time to see how much water shoots out of the pipe. If you have to work alone, you can loosen the stop valve until water sprays out around the connection between the valve and pipe. By doing this you can tighten the connection quickly and keep the water spillage to a minimum.

Find The Leaks or Clogs In Your Drains

Having issues with your drainage system? Does it have leaks? You could be in the market for a plumber. Uncertain where to turn? The excellent news is that it is fairly easy to find a reliable, experienced plumber for any of your home jobs.

One way to get a plumber is via word of mouth. Best of all, they may know someone in the area who does plumbing work who can report to your house right away.
Clogged draines or pipesIf you can?t get the name of a plumber thru recommendation by friends, you can look at the yellow pages and find a plumbing company or a union. You can be shown a list of plumbers in your neighborhood together with contact info. so many listings, you are just about guaranteed of finding someone to touch your situation.

You can also look for plumbers on the web. They will most likely ask what is happening with your leaking taps. If it’s not that serious and you can fix it up, they’ll give you some easy instructions on ways to fix it.

The paper in the classifieds section is a good resource for plumbers. But again, you must make sure that you search only in your neighborhood. People who are in the web and the classifieds are the ones you need to trust. Though there are good plumbers without enough apprenticeship but with good talents, engineers would always need those which are outstanding in the field.

Some people would always run to the plumber who had been pointed by their pals even if they don’t seem to be efficient and experienced plumbers for the explanation why they charge only a little amount compared to the plumbers in the union.

If your home has some tiny issues with leaks, there’s actually no need to consult the best plumbers, paying the highest cost when even the neophyte can fix minor problems.
Soon you’ll find out that calling a Plumber was the right decision, rather then you trying to fix it. They got the tools and the expertise to handle what your throw at them. So quit kidding your self you don’t know plumbers put from silly putty. that might work to. Cheers

A top brand that shines in the entire house water treatment San Antonio area is the one and only Evoclear No Salt Water Conditioners. The men behind this successful water treatment business is Colin and Dan who are siblings and had gathered years of working experience in this business. “We saw a shift in the Industry and saw a great opportunity to focus on that shift.” Evoclear No Salt Water Conditioners. are all green, wasting no water, using no electricity and using no salt. In fact, replacing the salt based systems hat have come under scrutiny the last few years for the effect they have on the surroundings is the main purpose of the creation of these systems. water softeners

FilterSmart is slowly taking control in changing the way of treating water. This should be done due to the fact that a lot of states in the U.S forbid the use of “ion exchange” devices. By doing this, property owners will never need to deal with “soft” water again. A “soft” water is what the salt water softeners produces, which replaces the natural nutrients of water, which are magnesium and calcium, with sodium. “The old way of treating residential water has changed the last few years. Home owners want filtered water full of healthy minerals without the added sodium,” explained by a co-founder of the company. New methods of eliminating chemical based compounds as well as safe dechlorinization process in the water is also being researched.

Such drastic change made Culligan, famous to be among the top salt softener firms in the business, deal with economic failure. A lot of people which includes homeowners and other customers show thanks to the filtering process offered by FilterSmart. Most householders and customer have conveyed their satisfaction in the water treatment made by Evoclear No Salt Water Conditioners.. According to both brothers, “We have gone against the grain and focused on filtering and offering a new salt free water conditioner that treats hard water without sodium or chemicals.” This successfully altered the way most individuals think in purifying their waters.

Within the last few years, American tap water has declined, giving way for another high-dollar industry where Evoclear stands out. Fracking that has been in constant news of late, is also bringing a growth attention in water quality.

The co-founder, Dan said in an interview, “We want to replace all salt based systems in America.” “Homeowners have been duped into buying salt softeners over the last 30 years that are not only environmentally unfriendly but are also incredible bad for your health. Basically they are useless!” Within the last Thirty years, house owners had questioned the usefulness of salt based softeners for them. Keeping with the sustainable approach to water treatment, FilterSmart tanks are reusable if the filtering media has expired. They’ll send you out a replacement carbon as it’s needed and you don’t need to purchase a whole new system. No Salt Water Conditioners That Actually Work

Furthermore, homeowners will not feel dissapointed about this investment since the tanks and spare parts has a lifetime warranty.

Evoclear No Salt Water Conditioners. seems to be unrivalled in terms of customer satisfaction. The water treatment industry has been refurbished making use of a much better way to restore the great reputation they’ve lost years ago. The demands for more effective water treatment have been given solution by these individuals. Colin expressed, “We basically are the Brita or PUR for whole house water filter systems. People like our brand and our business and we feel better about the water we offer for our customers,” verbalized Colin. A 90 day trial and cash back guarantee are among the benefits they offer which have been advantageous for most of their consumers. Few return of the systems have been made consisting of less than one percent because of the good quality of the system. FilterSmart founders are really confident with their work which is the reason why they are able to foresee generations to come using their system.

One last line he stated was, “We want your grandchildren calling us up 50 Years from now ordering replacement carbon.” You can purchase their systems direct from www.EvoclearWater.com In fact, a person with basic knowledge about plumbing may easily install their systems. Furthermore, there are local installers that they can suggest to you and these names can be seen through Angieslist. The average cost for installation is roughly $200.

Trenchless Sewer Repair

Our Plumbing Company is proud to provide an alternative: trenchless sewer repair. Reverse Osmosis Filtration

To get truly clean water from your faucet, you need a reverse osmosis water filtration system. A reverse osmosis system operates by filtering water through a membrane that only allows water molecules through while keeping out impurities. These systems are incredibly efficient and don’t consume any energy, meaning you won’t have to pay higher utility bills to enjoy clean, crisp water. Additionally, you’ll be doing your part to preserve the planet’s natural resources.

Reverse Osmosis Filtration
When water enters a reverse osmosis system, it’s driven by pressure from the plumbing system. This pressure then forces the water into the filter and against a semi-permeable membrane and a number of layered filters. The filters and membrane collect harmful contaminants and flush them away instead of allowing them to build up in the system. The filtered water is allowed to pass through the membrane to a storage tank, and from there, you can access it through your sink’s faucet.

What It Removes
Here is a list of just some of the impurities a reverse osmosis filtration system removes:

Lead
Arsenic
Sodium
Viruses
Bacteria
Fluoride
Nickel
Cadmium
Mercury
Iron
Zinc

Reverse Osmosis Filtration Installation
Our plumbers can meet with you to discuss the specifics of your home and your needs. Once we’ve created a customized solution, our team can quickly install and test your new reverse osmosis water filtration system. We’re always happy to answer any questions you have, and you’ll be informed during each step of the installation process. Most importantly all of our work and water filtration systems are backed by our guarantee.

Reverse Osmosis Filtration Maintenance
In order to get the most from your reverse osmosis system, we recommend that you schedule regular maintenance with our service team. During the maintenance process, we’ll check for potential problems, and you’ll always be informed of your options before any work begins. Our goal is to keep your system running in top shape so you and your family can enjoy clean, healthy water all year.

Water Softeners

If you’re tired of dealing with hard water and scaly buildup in your sinks, tubs, showers, and drains, a water softener is the answer to your problems. Our softening solutions get rid of calcium and other potentially harmful minerals that can lead to plumbing damage, leaving you with water free from a number of impurities. In addition, we also offer water filtration systems designed to filter your water even further. When combined, these two solutions provide clean, healthy water that won’t damage your body or your plumbing.

Water Softener Benefits
Water softeners aren’t just for delivering crisp, clean water—they actually help preserve and protect your home’s plumbing. Over time, hard water full of minerals can cause buildup within your pipes As these pipes narrow, they can become clogged and may crack or break. Additionally, buildup in your pipes can cause food debris to get caught, and this food debris can breed dangerous mold and bacteria.

Water Softener Installation
When you partner with our plumbing company for water softeners and a water filtration system, you can count on receiving fast and professional installation. Our plumbers are some of the best in the industry, and each cares about your comfort. We’ll take the time to understand your individual needs and can create a water softener solution to address them. When you rely on us to install a water softener, you’ll no longer have to worry about the potential for damage to your pipes, plumbing system, your health, or your home. Most importantly we back your satisfaction and all of our work with our guarantee.

Water Softener Maintenance
We can also maintain your water softener to ensure it continues operating at peak performance. It’s a proven fact that regular maintenance prevents breakdowns and system malfunctions, and it also allows our plumbers to catch and address potential problems before they turn into costly repairs. We can work out a maintenance schedule that fits your needs and your budget, and you’ll be informed of any work that takes place before we start.

Of course, our plumbers are always available to answer any questions you might have, and we can make recommendations that are personalized to your unique needs. Why Install a Tankless Water Heater?
Tankless water heaters have changed the way homeowners receive hot water. In the past, residents could only rely on conventional water heaters that used tanks to store hot water. Unfortunately, this method was wasteful because it required water to be heated over and over again to maintain a consistent temperature, even if the water wasn’t being used. As a result, homeowners had higher utility bills and more of the planet’s natural resources were wasted.

Tankless water heaters provide endless hot water throughout your home on demand. This means that you’ll never again have to worry about taking a shower while someone in your home washes dishes or does laundry. In fact, you’ll never have to shorten that hot shower because you ran out of hot water.

How Do Tankless Water Heaters Work?
Tankless hot water heaters work by heating your water as it passes through your plumbing system. Unlike a conventional water heater that uses a tank to store and heat water, the tankless water heater allows you to receive hot water on demand. When you turn on your faucet, you receive hot water fast, and because the water is being heated as it passes through your system, you won’t run out.

Water Heater Repair & Maintenance
In order to keep your tankless water heater in top shape after you’ve had it installed, we recommend regular maintenance. Our plumbers can maintain your tankless water heater system in top running condition throughout the year. This will extend the life of your unit and increase its efficiency.

need to add additional pipe and tubing for a dishwasher installation

As you can see, there are certainly a number of reasons why our certified experts will have to come to your home to put in new pipes and tubing.

Sewer Services

Unfortunately, sewers back up from time to time. You’ll have to maintain the sewers in order to prevent them from backing up and flooding your home. If it’s never happened to you, let’s say that it hopefully never will.

It’s difficult to get the smell out of the carpet if a sewer backs up into a finished basement. You’ll probably end up removing the carpet because it will not be salvageable.

We can perform electric sewer cleaning, jet cleaning, replace sewer lines, repair sewer lines, and even clear out any household drains that are in need. We can cover you in all of these areas and so much more, so don’t hesitate to give us a call when help is necessary.

The best method to clean an obstructed drain is to never have a blockage. There are some simple things you can do so that stopped-up drains happen hardly ever or never. If you avoid having drain issues entirely, you’ll avoid a lot of hassle and expenditure in emergency plumber calls.

No one likes hiring an emergency plumber. The service they do is costly, and it generally seems to cost greater than estimated and take a longer time than expected. Plus, similar to automobile servicing shops, many people do not actually grasp the work a plumber is doing. It is incredibly simple for a plumber to take advantage of a homeowner and overcharge them for work that did not actually need to be carried out in the first place. There have been many reported cases of just such a thing occurring. However, occasionally, you merely need to contact a plumber to do some work. How can you ensure you are dealing with someone who is credible and understands exactly what they are doing? Here are items you must understand before you select a plumber for your task.

In the majority of the houses, this is a real concern. Obstructing can be due to lots of factors. One of the factors is the accumulation of dust and non-dissolving particles. In the kitchen area, the waste particles will obstruct the drainage pipelines, while in the restroom the disposable products tossing through pipes get collected and lastly block the entire drain. In cold countries, clogging can be due to ice water. Then try to eliminate the obstruction with it. Then take the assistance of a plumber, if it is not possible for you to clear the blockage.

Setting up or servicing a water heater is a very cost-effective way to extend the life of the tank, including a 2nd anode. That’s actually what the makers do for their longer warrantied designs. You can do the same thing. If you integrate that with a routine maintenance regimen, you can add years to your water heater’s service life.

Thorough Investigation And Long Lasting Solutions
We provide numerous residential and industrial plumbing services, consisting of video leakage assessment, pipe toilet, repair work and drain unclogging, faucet replacement, brand-new building and construction pipes, hot water heater repair, trenchless technologies, water extraction, and a lot more.

Leakages can be external or internal. For external leakages, you can quickly identify when your flooring is getting wet whereas, with internal leaks, the walls get wet and can become harmful for the electric system. For such leakages, it is best to get a 24-hour plumber to attend to these at the earliest.

Talk the gas company into supplying a gas line and gas meter to your house free of charge. Free is great, gas home appliances can raise efficiency and increase home value. Replace the fluid heating unit with a gas heating unit. Because this is a manufactured home, have to make certain the water heater is rated for usage in a manufactured home. A gas fluid heating system recovers rapidly and ought to cost less to operate than an electrical fluid heating unit.

The option to calling a plumber is taking instant action yourself. Straight below the toilet tank (the leading half of the toilet) on the left side is a shut-off valve. Turning the valve clockwise will shut off the flow of water to the toilet. You might still have a stopped up water closet to deal with, but at least the flow of incoming water to your toilet will stop right away. Tidy up the pool on your restroom floor and handle it in the morning!

plumbing 7/27/2020 – gtg

Nowadays you can find a lot of tutorials on the Internet and purchase several books that can teach you how to do a plumbing connection. The fact is the research is already done and all you really need to do is look it up, read it, learn it, and practice it. One thing that is not told in those tutorials is that in most cases you will not get it right from the first try. It took me 7 tries to properly solder a simple plumbing connection and it was still not perfect. It did not leak but was not perfect. You must be prepared to make a mistake in order to become a virtual “do it yourself, plumber”.

In knowing how to do a plumbing connection, the first step comes in understanding all the pieces involved. You must learn the difference between a trap and a vent and realize which piece is a 45 degrees connector and which is a 90 degrees connector. It might sound simple but you would be surprised at how many individuals do not know this fact.

There are two main types of materials used in building plumbing systems. You have the classic copper system and special PVC system. With the PVC you will need special tools and all connections are done by use of heat. The pieces basically melt at the sides of the connectors and then get linked together. When they dry off (which happens fast) the two pieces will be joined together and you will not be able to unloosen them as with copper connectors. Copper plumbing connections should be the best way to start on the “do it yourself plumber” mission. If you do something wrong you usually unscrew pieces or try to unsolder them. Both operations are pretty easy while soldering is difficult.

Three types of plumbing connections are available: T connections, straight connections, and 90 degrees connections. You will also be able to use 45 degrees connections in order to fit all the system better. Before starting the operation, take some time to plan it. Proper planning means half the work will be complete. Take a piece of paper and start drawing what your system will be like and try to calculate the exact number of connectors, types, and length of pipe you will need. Always purchase extra, just to be safe. If this is your first try you should buy more extra pieces than you usually would.

Learning how to do plumbing connections is very easy and most main fixtures come with instruction manuals. Also, when purchasing the pieces you can ask the clerk different questions you might have. He will surely know the answer but be sure to not have too many as you could annoy him. As said earlier, all the information you need might just be a click away. All you really need is the courage to start it all and enough spare time to finish it.

Above Ground Steel Oil Tanks

An above-ground steel oil tank is used to store waste oil from the home. Most steel tanks have the same type of characteristics such as a 12 gauge thickness, a half or two-inch supply, four leg brackets, and one and a quarter inch female thread. Two handles at each end for transport and it is easy to replace. Any oil tanks for home or commercial must meet and comply with the standards of the CWB, ULC, CSA, and the UL.

One manufacturer of these tanks is Granby Steel Tanks; they have a great reputation in both commercial and residential above-ground tanks. They offer 100-gallon vertical tanks that are 12 gauge thickness and the weight capacity is 165 pounds. There is a 150-gallon vertical tank that has 12 gauge thickness and the weight capacity is 225 pounds, 150-gallon horizontal and 12 gauge, and a weight capacity of 225 pounds. The 200-gallon vertical tank has a thickness of 12 gauge with a 260-pound weight.

The 200-gallon horizontal tank has a 12 gauge thickness and a 260-pound weight capacity. 250 gallon vertical and horizontal tanks both 12 gauge and 310-pound weight capacity. The steel is ASTM A-569, female threaded openings. The tanks can be pressure tested between 5 and 7 PSIG.

Sometimes a tank can become a failure for different reasons. One reason may be water got into the tank from a pipe possibly or water from the tank being outside. Climate can be another factor if the tank is stored outside. When the weather is warm the warm moisture can seep into the tank and air can accumulate in the tank.

Even if the tank is a 12 gauge steel there are some things that can happen, for example, a steel tank can over time become corroded with rust from the inside of the tank. What you can do is inspect the tank for pinholes or just an open leak. Steel is thin on these tanks and what may look strong may be brittle so be careful you don’t puncture a bigger hole.

A bad delivery of oil can be the cause of a faulty tank as well. Above ground oil tanks have to be inspected. You can have someone from the oil company come out and check the tank for leaks and make sure that it is run properly. If you choose to have an outdoor or an indoor above ground tank, either way, make sure they are installed properly either by a professional or if you choose to do it. Have the tank inspected to make sure the installation was done correctly.

Keep the maintenance on your tank, check every month or so for leaks and the first sign of a pinhole contact your oil company, if you catch it in time maybe it can be saved by a patch. Don’t let it go too long before it turns into something where you have to replace the whole tank.

Kerosene Heater Safety

There are some people who in the dead of winter and they are freezing will do anything in order to stay warm. That includes buying a portable kerosene heater. What some people don’t do is they don’t follow any type of safety measures and there are more fires from kerosene space heaters than from any other type of heater. Here are some of the dangers that could happen if you don’t use the proper precautions.

One of the most common mistakes that people make with their kerosene heaters is that they place the heater too close to furniture, curtains and products that are easily combustible. By taking a few extra minutes to carefully and strategically place the heater away from anything flammable could save your life. You also want to make sure that the heater is placed on a sturdy table where a pet can’t bump into the table and knock the heater over. You can avoid a fire or even an explosion by preparing the heater. Make sure you do not use the wrong fluid when filling the tank and make sure that you do not light it until the filling of the heater is complete.

Another problem that arises very often among kerosene users is burns. It is very easy to burn yourself on these heaters. They get very hot and if you touch it ever so slightly can cause an injury. Make sure that these heaters can’t be knocked over or into by a child or a pet. It only takes a bump into an unstable table to cause a whole bunch of injuries.

Most people do not think of this when they purchase a kerosene heater. That is asphyxiation, kerosene heaters eat oxygen as they burn. If you are using them in a very small room or a room that does not have proper ventilation, the oxygen could decrease to a very dangerous level. When there is not enough oxygen it there could be combustion or fuel and then carbon monoxide is formed. As everyone knows how deadly carbon monoxide can be.

Kerosene heaters can also cause indoor air pollution because not only does the heater give off carbon dioxide but it gives off nitrogen dioxide and even sulfur dioxide. Taking in these pollutants can be very dangerous to children, pregnant women, and people with breathing problems and cardiovascular problems and the elderly. To be safe is very simple, read the manual that is provided with the heater and follow these safety rules and you will have a nice warm winter.

To recap the safety features of the kerosene heater. Keep the heater away from all furniture, curtains and combustible products. Keep the kerosene heater on a sturdy table. Make sure the room has enough ventilation to escape. It might be a good idea to install a carbon monoxide detector in the room you are keeping the heater in. Keep children and pets away from the vicinity of the heater to avoid burns.

Plumbing Chlorine Feeders Into Your Filter System

Chlorine Feeders are a great way to maximize the safety and the performance of your swimming pool and in the long run, will save you money on the chlorine that you buy. They are many benefits in using a chlorine feeder in-line or off-line on your swimming pool filter system. A chlorine feeder is a canister made of a special plastic that can endure the chemical called chlorine and is loaded with chlorine tablets so that the swimming pool water can flow through the canister and dispense the chlorine into the pool.

Types Of Chlorine Feeders:

There are two types of chlorine feeders, the “In-line” feeder and the “off-line” feeder are the most common ones on the market today. Depending on what type of pool and what type of plumbing you have will determine the type of feeder that you will want to install or buy for your pool.

The In-line Chlorine Feeder:

The in-line chlorine feeder is plumbed using hard pipe or rigid PVC pipe and is plumbed in the plumbing lines of the main filter system resulting in its name “in-line chlorine feeder”. In order to install this type of feeder, you will have to have enough area somewhere in lines of the filter system after the filter. For example, you will need about 12 inches of space on the pipe to install this unit.

The Off-line Chlorine Feeder:

The off-line chlorine feeder is piped into your swimming pool system using something called “saddle clamps” that attach to a small area of the pipe or fitting. These types of feeders have more play and flexibility in their installation because they use flexible feed lines and do not have to be directly installed in between the main plumbing lines as the in-line chlorine feeder does. These types of feeders are more commonly used in lots of above aground pool applications or to add a chlorine feeder to an existing inground filter system that doesn’t have the room for the traditional in-line type.

Benefits and Advantages Of Feeders:

Back in the old days everyone used to simply just put the chlorine in the skimmer baskets and the when the pump system ran the chlorine would be dispensed through the pool by the flow of the water passing the chlorine tablet in the skimmer. The downside to this was that when the filter system was not in use the levels of chlorine would start to rise to a dangerous level and start to eat away and the plumbing below the skimmer. Another downside of keeping tablets in the skimmer is that small and young children can have easy access to the dangerous chemicals that lurk there, with a sealed chlorine feeder you can have the peace of mind that the chemicals are out of harm’s way.

If you are still not sure what type of feeder you will need then contacting your local swimming pool supply store or hiring a swimming pool service professional to do the job for you might be the best way.

Below Are Some Tips To Help. – Whole-Home Contractor Services

Your wallet will notice and your home will show it when you decide to get informed and begin managing your own home plumbing. You will also feel proud of your work and will be able to have a well-kept home. These are great attitudes to have. Just like with all types of other skills, you can always improve your plumbing skills and add new ones. Below are some tips to help.

If your pipes are making a racket, there is a simple way to quiet them down. Exposed pipes need to be anchored. You might want to contact a professional when the pipes are hard to access.

You plumbing experiences will go much smoother if you know your tools, and have the knowledge of how to use each one. Make sure you read all the directions and manuals, while also taking advantage of online resources and the library to help you with your projects. Prior to attempting any repairs, be certain to plan ahead in order to avoid expensive errors.

If you aren’t having any luck using a plunger on a clogged toilet, you may want to try pouring warm water into it from waist high. You can repeat this procedure once the water returns to a low level.

If your garbage disposal stops working, never try to fix it by reaching down with your hands. Even when they are turned off, disposals can be very dangerous. Research on the internet for diagrams, troubleshooter, or FAQs about your disposal.

Make sure that you’re always cleaning your garbage disposal regularly. Doing this will save you from having to repair or replace an expensive piece of equipment in the future. By regularly using a mixture of dish soap, cherry pits, and citrus rinds, you can ensure that your disposal runs smoothly and smells as fresh as one that is brand new.

Pour equal parts baking soda followed by vinegar down your bathtub drain once a month. Cover the drain with a plug or rag as you wait for the chemical reaction between the vinegar and baking soda to happen in your pipes. Wait until the chemical reaction runs its course, then flush the pipes by pouring in a kettle full of boiling water. This process should open up the pipes by clearing out hair build-up and soap scum.

Ensure that the overflow holes in your sinks are not clogged. Overflow holes exist to act as a double check in case of an overfilling sink. That may seem unimportant – but it will become a problem if they are clogged. It’s easy to maintain your plumbing, in this regard. Do you notice the red reset button on your water heater popping out every now and then? This happens when the water heater is tripping. This may be a puzzle to some homeowners, so let’s take a look at some concerns about water heater tripping.

Why does my water heater keep tripping?
There are many potential reasons why a water heater would trip, but the most likely reason is that the water heater has gotten too hot. What does this mean and when does the water get too hot?

Normally, anything below 180 degrees would be acceptable, but anything over that, expect the water heater to trip. This means that the reset button or high limit switch would pop out. Why does this happen? It is part of a protection mechanism to prevent you from being burned as you take a hot shower.

However, the main reason why the water would get too hot can usually be traced to a bad thermostat. Electric water heaters have a thermostat for each heating element. These are responsible for controlling the elements to regulate the water temperature as it begins to cool down.

When the thermostat goes bad, it can get stuck and cause the continuous delivery of heat and eventual tripping. How can you check if it is a thermostat problem? A licensed professional plumber can use a multimeter to find out and put in a replacement.

What causes the problem?
There are other causes aside from a bad thermostat like:

A short in the heating element causing it to continuously heat the water even if the thermostat has shut off.
Loose wiring can also result in water heater tripping because of the improper distribution of electricity.
The reset switch itself may be the cause of the water heater tripping because it is malfunctioning.
Water heaters are usually plugged into Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCI) to protect against bodily harm. It disconnects the current to prevent electrical shock. This is better than circuit breakers because it is activated by currents that are often too small to trip regular breakers.

GFCI trips or ghost trips are often caused by worn-out insulation, water, and conductive dust among others. The leakage current will result in intermittent and unnecessary tripping.

Troubleshooting Electric Water Heaters
The most common problem encountered by homeowners when it comes to water heaters is that the water is not as hot as it should be. This is commonly resolved by:

Reconnecting the power and resetting the thermostat;
Flushing the heater to remove sediments;
Insulating hot water pipes;
Replacing the thermostat or heating elements; and
Raising thermostat temperature.

How to repair or replace?
As far as electric tankless water heaters go, the most common part that needs to be replaced is the heating element. This is how you do it:

Check the manual to locate the heating element.
Disconnect the power and water supply to the unit.
Turn on the nearest hot water faucet to siphon out the remaining hot water in the system.
Remove the cover to the heating chamber plate to reach the plate and allow the water to drain.
Disconnect the wires of the heating unit and wrap the heating element with a rag.
Remove the nut keeping the heating element in place to remove it.
Put in an exact replacement and make sure that the O-ring is correctly seated.
Turn back the power and water supply to test the heater.
How much does the repair regularly cost?
If the problem is not the breaker, then the repair would focus mostly on the heating element. Replacing a heating element would normally cost around $200 to $300 and must be done by a professional because of the risks involved. A professional would usually charge about $200 to $300 for the two heating elements.

When the cause of the problem is the thermostat, a replacement can be installed by a professional for roughly $150 to $200, inclusive of professional fees. The cost of the part is around $20. Each heating element has its own thermostat control.

If in need to install a new tankless water heater
This type of water heater usually goes on plaster or drywall. The water supply lines should be routed to the water heater with the water utility going into the inlet and the pipe to the outlet. The shutoff valves for both lines should be installed near the unit. It is a good idea to have a pressure relief valve installed as well.

Union fittings can be used to finalize the connections. Turn on the water valve but not the power. Open all the faucets in your home to run water for about a minute. Shut off the valves and remove the inline filter to clean out debris. Replace the filters, open the water supply, and turn on the power. Test the unit and check for leaks.

This may sound so easy on paper, but remember, working with water and electricity at the same time is considerably dangerous. That is why it is always suggested to call for a licensed professional plumber when handling water heater repair, replacement, and installations.

Additional Questions
What is the reset button on a water heater for?
The reset button on the water heater is a safety device that shuts off the power to the unit to give the heated water time to cool down before operation can be resumed.

How do you know if you have a bad thermocouple?
Press and hold the gas knob as you put it in pilot while pressing the igniter button. Keep the gas knob depressed for at least 60 seconds after the pilot lights.

If the light immediately goes out when you release the knob, then you have a bad thermocouple. If the pilot stays lit but the burner does not start in five minutes, you have to test the thermocouple.

How much is a hot water heater thermostat?
For the water heater thermostat itself, the cost can be anywhere from $20 to $35 for each. To have this installed, a licensed professional would normally charge about $100 for labor.

How long does it take for a hot water heater to heat up?
The time it takes for a water heater to heat up would depend on its type:

Gas – between 30 to 40 minutes for fully heated water in the tank.
Electric – anywhere from an hour to an hour and 20 minutes.
Solar – similar to electric, but without backup energy on a cloudy day, it may mean never.
Tankless – virtually no heating time required.
All of these, of course, are average values and can vary depending on the make, model, and manufacturer of the water heater unit.
